Gift cards go local

by Jourdan Fairchild in ,

Gift giving is one of my favorite hobbies—just ask my family and friends. I love hunting down the perfect present, like a bullet flask for my Army veteran brother or a statement necklace for my jewelry-obsessed sister. And unlike some people, I also love a good gift card—when it's selected with the right person in mind. So it's not surprising that I'm pumped about a new site that's expanding the gift card world by actually keeping things close to home. Launched in 2012 by a pair of ladies in Chicago, GiftBar allows you to search by neighborhood and occasion for top-notch boutiques, salons, restaurants, etc. Then you simply select the price you'd like to give, choose an adorable design, and then send the card via email, mobile device, or print it off to share in person. If you're really stumped about what to select (or you don't know the person very well), just opt for the GiftBar of Choice, which lets the recipient do the picking. As of now, the service is only available in New York, LA, and Chicago, but plans for expansion are in the works.
